Day by Day Itinerary
Day 1: Departure for Germany
Begin your pilgrimage with an overnight flight to Berlin, Germany, setting the stage for a journey through the pivotal moments of the Reformation.
Day 2: Berlin
Arrive in Berlin and immerse yourself in Germany’s largest city. After meeting your Sacred Travel Paths guide, transfer to your hotel for check-in. Enjoy a welcome dinner and get to know your fellow travelers. Rest and prepare for the days ahead in Berlin.
Day 3: Berlin
Explore Berlin’s rich history and cultural landscape. Visit the iconic Unter den Linden boulevard, lined with linden trees, and the Brandenburg Gate, a symbol of Berlin’s reunification. Stop by the German Historical Museum to gain insight into Germany’s past. See remnants of the Berlin Wall and Checkpoint Charlie, which symbolize the Cold War era. Head to Kurfürstendamm, Berlin’s luxury shopping avenue, and visit the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church. Conclude the day with a visit to the Olympic Stadium. Enjoy dinner and another overnight stay in Berlin.
Day 4: Juterbog & Wittenberg
Travel to Juterbog to visit St. Nicholas’ Church and see the coffer of Johann Tetzel, whose actions contributed to Luther’s 95 Theses. Continue to Wittenberg, the heart of the Reformation. Visit All Saints’ Church, where Luther nailed his 95 Theses, and City Church, where he preached and baptized his children. Explore Luther’s House, now a museum, and the Renaissance mansion of Philip Melanchthon. Reflect on the Reformation’s impact before dinner and an overnight stay in Wittenberg.
Day 5: Torgau & Leipzig
Head to Torgau, where you’ll visit Hartenfels Castle and its chapel consecrated by Luther. See St. Mary’s Church, where Katharina von Bora, Luther’s wife, is buried. Continue to Leipzig to explore Altes Rathaus, St. Nicholas Church, and St. Thomas Church, where Luther preached and where Bach was choirmaster. Visit the Bach Museum and learn about his legacy. Enjoy dinner and an overnight stay in Leipzig.
Day 6: Eisleben
Visit Eisleben, Luther’s birthplace and the city where he died. Tour his birth house and death house, now museums. Visit the Church of St. Peter and Paul, where Luther was baptized, and St. Andrew’s Church, where he gave his last sermon. Travel to Halle to visit the Bible Institution of Castein. Return to Leipzig for dinner and an overnight stay.
Day 7: Erfurt
Travel to Erfurt, known as “Thuringian Rome” for its many churches and monasteries. Visit the Augustinian Monastery, where Luther lived as a monk, and St. Mary’s Cathedral, where he was ordained. Explore the medieval streets and other historical sites. Enjoy dinner and an overnight stay in Erfurt.
Day 8: Eisenach & Wartburg Castle
Drive to Wartburg Castle, where Luther translated the New Testament into German while disguised as “Knight George.” Tour the castle and visit the Lutherstube. Explore Eisenach, visiting the Bachhaus, the first museum dedicated to Bach, and the Lutherhaus, now a museum featuring exhibits on Luther’s teachings. Continue to Mainz for dinner and an overnight stay.
Day 9: Mainz & Worms
In Mainz, visit the Gutenberg Museum and see the Mainz Cathedral. Travel to Worms, where Luther defended his beliefs before the Imperial Diet. Visit the Reformation Monument, St. Peter’s Cathedral, and the Church of the Holy Trinity. Return to Mainz for a farewell dinner and overnight stay.
Day 10: Frankfurt & Depart for Home
Reflect on the holy places and experiences of your pilgrimage as you prepare to return to the USA. Depart from your hotel to the Frankfurt airport, carrying with you renewed faith and cherished memories of your pilgrimage through Germany’s sacred Reformation sites.
